Kaliningrad

Tiny Kaliningrad, nestled between the nations of Lithuania to its north and Poland to its south, is Russia’s most westerly territory.  Once German, it came under Soviet control in 1945 with the defeat of Germany in World War Two and what was known as Konigsberg became Kaliningrad.

Much of the city was heavily bombed during the war, and for a time, there was a reluctance to build in the traditional style as the Soviets wished to put their own stamp on things.  More recently, buildings like the Cathedral and Konigsberg House of Engineering were restored, with more sympathetic restorations to follow.  There are a number of interesting museums in the city, including one devoted to amber, a commonly found semi-precious stone along the shores of the Baltic.
