The Moscow Maslenitsa Festival 2017

Travel News in Russia, ex USSR, Mongolia & China
The Moscow Maslenitsa Festival 2017 will take place from 17 to the 26th of February. This year, the Moscow Maslenitsa Festival will open with the Moscow Seasons street festivities. Traditional Maslenitsa fairs will open at 13 venues in the city’s centre. Visitors will enjoy public festivities, sporting events, historical re-enactments, street performances, workshops and many pancakes.

Maslenitsa festival is one of the most beloved festivals of Russia. It is otherwise known as Butter Week or Pancake week. This festival has got a very significant inner meaning which connects it to the celebration of the end of Russia's long winter. At the same time, the dual ancestry of the event as both a Pagan and a Christian celebration adds the extra flavour to it.

Though this festival goes back to the Pagan times, the present day celebrations have assimilated the Christian tradition of Shrovetide pancakes. Each day of the week-long festivities has a specific theme around which the activities revolve.
