Can you guess what our favourite Russian holiday is? |
Of course, it has to be New Year. We love it so much we celebrate it not once, but twice!
Officially, like everyone else, we celebrate on January 1st but when the mid-month doom and gloom sets in, we dust off
our party outfits one more time to mark Old New Year on January 13th. You see, that's the advantage of using two calendars:
the Georgian calendar which has been in use only since 1918 and the Julian calendar which was adopted by Tsar Peter the Great
in 1700 and continues to be used by the Russian Orthodox Church to this day.
If you manage to visit Russia at this time of year, you'll be surprised to find that many of our traditions have a lot in
common with those in the West. We too look forward to unwrapping the presents our friends and family have placed under the
tree; we just have to wait a week longer. We might not have Father Christmas, but we do have Grandfather Frost, and he does
an equally impressive job, aided by the beautiful Snegurocka. She's his daughter, and with her long blonde plaits and blue
or white fur coat, as sidekicks go, she's an awful lot prettier than your standard elf.
|
The Russian New Year parties are an excuse to let your hair down, so sling on the fancy dress or at least a mask, and join us.
There'll be plenty of food, the alcohol will flow freely and as the Kremlin's chiming clock strikes midnight, we'll
lift our champagne glasses and propose our customary toast:
|
"С Новым Годом,
с новым счастьем" To the New Year, to the new happiness!
Wishing you health and happiness the whole year through,
|
With festive wishes from the Go Russia Team
