Dear Traveller, |
Exciting news from Go Russia! |
But first, let us tell you a little about one of Russia’s finest marine artists. This painter from
the Romantic school went by the name of Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky and lived from
1817 until 1900. He was born in Crimea, the son of an Armenian couple but gained his
education at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. After graduating, he travelled in
Europe, spending a lot of time in Venice and later Florence. It’s no surprise this experience
gave him a lifelong love of Italian art.

|
Returning to Russia in 1844, he secured a job with the Russian Navy as their official painter.
He travelled with them, painting seascapes and naval battles. It’s said that he didn’t paint
while at sea, instead preferring to trust his memory and recreate the scenes back on dry
land. He must have done a good job. The great Russian playwright Anton Chekhov was
heard to mutter the phrase “worthy of Aivazovsky’s brush” when he wanted to describe
something he found beautiful.
|
Aivazovsky’s popularity wasn’t confined to Russia. This prolific artist exhibited many of his
6000 paintings across Europe, in Istanbul and also in the United States. When you think how
many great artists lived in abject poverty and only became collectable after their deaths,
that’s no mean feat.
